Universal-Investment migrates more than 300 Metzler funds to its own platform

On the first weekend in August, Universal-Investment migrated more than 300 direct mandates, mutual and special funds from Metzler Asset Management and has been managing them since then on its own platform. Both parties signed a corresponding outsourcing agreement last year. The insourcing mandate, which comprises assets totalling EUR 56 billion and is considered one of the largest in the German investment industry, was implemented promptly despite the coronavirus pandemic and thanks to extensive preparatory measures.

"Thanks to the professional commitment on both sides, the migration of the Metzler funds to the Universal-Investment platform was successful. The space created by the outsourcing enables us to implement our growth initiative in a targeted manner and consistently push ahead with the expansion of customer-oriented services in portfolio management, pension management and Master KVG. Our special focus will be on further expanding ESG integration, ESG advisory and ESG reporting, which are already very strong areas of ours. We are and will remain the first point of contact for our fund clients," said Nicole Reising, Managing Director at Metzler Asset Management.

"Mastering this very demanding task and sticking to the agreed schedule was only possible thanks to the excellent cooperation between the two companies. I am very proud of how committed our employees have been to this task, despite the challenges posed by the coronavirus pandemic," said COO Stephan Scholl. "This is a landmark project that has brought us closer to our long-term goal of becoming the leading fund services platform for all asset classes in Europe," he continued.

As of August 1, the fund services platform has taken over NAV calculation and statutory reporting for nearly 700 segments of Metzler Asset Management

Migration on schedule

To ensure safe migration, Universal-Investment took on complementary external forces and employed additional staff. In the past twelve months, the team has prepared the migration carefully, for example regarding IT interfaces, resulting in a transfer of all funds without complications. Metzler is pursuing strategic change and thus outsourcing part of the value chain in order to focus on expanding client-oriented services such as portfolio management, pension management, sustainability investments and Master KVG.

"The acquisition shows how efficient our platform and employees are. It is good to know that we can find and successfully implement appropriate solutions for our clients – even for complex projects like this. From start-ups to large-volume outsourcing mandates, we have the infrastructure, skills and resources for tailor-made solutions," explained Universal-Investment’s Chief Customer Officer Katja Müller.

With the additional volume of the Metzler funds, Universal-Investment has increased its assets managed in insourcing to more than EUR 180 billion. For the first time, this includes funds domiciled in Ireland, which will be administered with immediate effect. In addition to this, the company is responsible for almost EUR 400 billion euros administered in own vehicles.
