Quantitative Investment Strategies

Sources of return beyond traditional portfolios

UCITS-compliant, ready for implementation

Quantitative investment strategies (QIS) exploit rule-based risk and factor premiums across all asset classes. They offer low correlation to equities and bonds, daily liquidity, and full transparency.

They are UCITS-compliant and ready for direct implementation in a fund structure.

The fund is the optimal implementation structure

Many asset managers and banks still implement QIS via certificates, thereby bearing issuer risks that investors increasingly look to avoid. A regulated fund resolves this problem, being structurally robust, marketable, and fully compatible with existing UCITS/AIFM frameworks.

Universal Investment as QIS platform

Universal Investment is one of Europe’s largest fund platforms and has proven experience in structuring and operating QIS funds. We have already launched several complex quantitative strategies in collaboration with asset managers and banks as regulated, daily liquid UCITS vehicles.

Our partners provide the strategy, while we take care of independent governance, fund administration, risk management, and the entire operational infrastructure.

Award-winning expertise

The Systematic Dispersion Fund won two awards at the 2026 UCITS Hedge Awards in the Volatility Dispersion category: Best Performing Fund in 2025 and Best Performing Fund over 2 Years. Launched by Citigroup Global Markets Europe in collaboration with us, the fund serves as a prime example of how a systematic volatility and dispersion strategy implemented as a QIS can function as a regulated, investable vehicle.

Typical use cases for QIS

  • QIS as an overlay: QIS is applied to an existing bond portfolio via a total return swap (TRS). This keeps the fund structure simple and compliant with UCITS/AIFM regulations while enhancing the return profile.
  • QIS as a standalone fund strategy: Factor and risk premiums, such as those from carry, trend, dispersion or volatility strategies, are incorporated directly into the fund.
  • QIS in a multi-asset context: QIS components can complement existing portfolios, offering additional resilience, particularly during periods of stress.
